CPU and GPU instance types, specifications, and hourly rates

Cluster Specification

Each HPC cluster consists of multiple sets Compute nodes. These compute nodes are will be referred to as Compute Resources. Compute nodes can be comprised of CPU or GPU nodes.

cpu2mem8a indicates that the included nodes all have 2 CPUs and 8 GB of RAM. There are two (a & b) groups with overlapping instance types to support running different instance types with the same CPU and RAM configuration. This is explained further in the Optimizing Workloads with SLURM page. By default, the lowest-price instance will be chosen, unless it is not available. Only instances that are 1.5x the price of the lowest-price instance have been included in the respective Compute Resource.

The reason for varying prices within the Compute Resource group is due to the instances characteristics. For example, c6a.xlarge can be translate as “c” for series (c=compute, m=general, or r=memory), “6a” is the generation of the processor (6a =3rd Generation AMD EPYC vs 6i = 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors ), “xlarge” is the instance size (xlarge has 16 GB of RAM).

The 3rd and 4th letters are for options such as:

  • a - AMD processor
  • i - Intel processor
  • g - AWS graviton processor
  • I - Storage optimized
  • n - Network and EBS optimized

By default, a limit is placed on the total number of concurrent instances that each Compute Resources can start. The limit is listed as MaxCount under each Compute Resource.

This was put in place as a financial guardrail. Please contact the HPC team if you wish to adjust the MaxCount for one or more of the Compute Resources.
