Summer party 2023

Agenda

  • When: Sept 16, 11:30am to 3:30pm
  • Where: https://www.tigerwang.org/posts/ross_dock/

What to do:

  • We start at 11:30am for an ice-breaking guessing game – Identity Intel, details see section below.
  • Picnic lunch starts at 12:30pm. It’s going to be pizza + Asian deli + snacks and drinks that Gao will buy on Saturday morning. Please DM me if you want to tag along/help with the shopping. Also DM if you want to suggest what to buy.
  • Then outdoor games, hang-out, snacks, drink or just chill by the river. You are welcome to bring whatever you think is fun to play with the group – ball, frisbee, badminton, a dog – as long as you can cope with it even if it ends up into Hudson. Gao will bring two frisbees and a jumbo jenga.
  • Around 3pm we’ll have a wrap-up discussion

Identity Intel game

Please bring to the party a piece of paper with 4 sentences written on it:

  1. Travel — pick one from these two: “In summer 2019, I was in …. (eg Spain) …”, or “I travelled to … (eg Spain) this summer”.
  2. Hobbies — “Outside of work and other duties, I spent most of my leisure time … (eg playing LoL)”
  3. Work interest — “At work, I am most interested in the topic / task of …, whereas I’m least excited about (but have to do it for whatever reason) …”
  4. Recommendation about anything — “I highly recommend … “

Please write two truths and one lie for #1, #2 and #3. For #3 if either or both of ... is a lie then the whole statement is considered a lie. For #4, it can be anything you truly recommend that can be useful to others, including but not limited to a book, a phone App, a movie, a shopping mall, a kitchen utensil, or even better, a software/package/library that makes your worklife so much better.

Then at the party, if you are from or familiar with the group please fold the note, drop it into a bowl then later draw from the bowl a note written by another person. If you are a guest please feel free to either also drop it in the bowl or keep the note with you and not drawing from the bowl. We will read the note in turn. If you are reading a note from another person then you have to 1) guess who the note belongs to, and 2) which statement is a lie. If you fail others will help. If you are reading a note from yourself then everyone else will try to guess which statement is a lie. Then 3) whoever wrote the “recommendation” will explain it a bit if necessary.

Wrap-up discussion

At the end we will regroup in a circle for a freestyle discussion on “what improvements you would like to suggest that we can make at work?”. Please feel free to utter whatever you have in mind, including but not limited to environment, facilities, organization and management etc.
